What Causes Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins are formed as a result of swelling of the veins. Such veins, if left untreated may cause other medical complications. On the basis on the sizes, varicose veins can be classified into reticular veins and collateral veins. The reticular veins have the biggest diameter if 0.6 to 4.4 mm. The collateral veins are comparatively smaller at 3 mm.

Varicose veins are most frequently found in the lower limbs of the body like the legs and thigh. However, their occurrence in some of the other places like the vulva or rectum in case of hemorrhoids isn’t uncommon. A varicose vein is never natural. It is formed due to a diseased condition of the venous wall referred to as chronic venous disease.

A varicose vein can be detected by the abnormal swelling of a vein. This swelling results from the abnormality in the venous wall. Each expansion is a pocket where the blood accumulates and the flow stagnates. The wall of the varicose vein being thin may rupture due to the excessive pressure exerted against it.

There are three layers that constitute the venous walls. But varicose veins have walls that endure atrophy or hypertrophy. If the wall experiences atrophy, then it becomes thinner than a normal venous wall and becomes vulnerable to rupture during excessive pressure. If the wall undergoes hypertrophy, then this results in the thickening of the wall. But neither of these are the result of the normal aging process of a vein.

The blood that collects in the pockets of the varicose veins impair the functions of these veins. The toxins that are formed in the stalled blood affect the venous wall. The accumulated blood can also become the reason for superficial venous thrombosis by forming blood clots or thrombus.

The varicose veins attempt to grow in number and size. With the ageing process, the venous blood can increase in the pouches of these varicose veins and the walls of these veins being weak may not be able to bear the increase in blood pressure. This can split and damage the blood vessels and impair the blood flow.
